Howrah is the sister city of Kolkata and shows a constant transformation of its urban land use pattern from the time of its inception near about 500 years ago. Transport is the most important constraint of urban land as it helps in the development of the city.

At present Howrah exhibits high control and centralization of road based mass transport services which helps in the enlargement of the local linkages system. However the road based mass transport services are currently dominated by private sector companies with certain degree of public sector intervention.

Due to the varying scenario of the transport services in this city, an effort has been made to investigate the spatial pattern of road based mass transport development with special reference to bus services.

Bus is the prime means for both short distance and long distance mass transport services for the natives of Howrah. On the basis of destination system and journey generation the bus services of Howrah could be classified into three different types namely (i) Within Howrah Bus Services, (ii) Howrah – Kolkata Bus Services and (iii) Howrah – Long distance bus services.

Within Howrah Bus Services

The bus service in the Howrah district consists of mini, private and executive Buses. There are 34 mini bus routes and 24 different private bus routes with 821 and 666 fleet strength, which mostly provide services to join Kolkata city. There are another 42 executive bus routes and 31 private bus routes with fleet strength of 185 and 346 respectively. These buses offer services in the interior parts of the district.

Howrah to Kolkata Bus Services

Howrah along with Kolkata creates the busiest urban terrain in the whole eastern region of India. These two cities are positioned on 2 opposite banks of Hugli River and are connected via 3 bridges namely Howrah Bridge, Nivedita Setu, and Second Hugli Bridge. Millions of passengers travel via buses from these bridges everyday for various purposes.

Buses perform as the prime mode for the urban passengers to reach Howrah or Kolkata without much hassle. Total 14 different types of buses carry out on these two bridges with about 148 different bus routes and 2,600 permitted buses daily. However among the different types of buses private and Mini buses rule over the other types for mass transport services on Howrah Bridge with a fleet strength of 766 and 1,335 buses respectively. 

Long Distance Bus Services in Howrah

This city also offers many Long distance buses. Among the various long distance bus routes are the Howrah - New Digha route, east and West Midnapur, Purulia, Hooghly, Nadia etc.

State Transport Buses in Howrah

Howrah public transport is run by the WBSTC. Its fleet consists of Volvo low-floor buses. It also offers air conditioned Volvo low-floor buses. With the initiation of AC Volvo bus, buses have become a major road travel mode and traveling has become easier. The AC Volvo buses are the most well-liked means of public transport among the metropolitan travelers. Among the other buses are the mini buses for the convenience of the people.

One has to purchase separate tickets for separate buses as the ticketing system here is not a centralized one.
