Highways in Howrah

Howrah is connected to the other parts of the state as well as country via three national highways. These national Highways run through many villages of the region. According to statistics the Howrah has the total road length of approximately 300 km.

This highway connects Howrah to the different important cities. 2 national highways- NH 6 and NH 2 are linked to Vidyasagar Setu through Kona expressway. The starting point of this Grand Trunk Road is at the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Howrah.

This road added up to the road space of Howrah by connecting to Vidyasagar Setu from various locations. The chief one is 8 km long Kona Expressway, built by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority serves as a connector of Kolkata to National Highway 2 (NH 2) and therefore is part of Golden project.

Kona Expressway also joins with National Highway 6 (NH 6) as well at Nibra town of the Howrah district. This erstwhile State Highway forms National Highway 117 (NH 117) which is 133 km long, along with Diamond Harbour Road.

National Highway 2 or NH 2

This highway is most commonly referred to as Delhi–Kolkata Road. It is one of the busiest highways of the country. This highway is a 1,465 km long.

This highway constitutes a major portion of the historical Grand Trunk Road along with NH 1 and NH 91 in India. It runs all the way through the states of Delhi, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The highway starts from Mathura and connects to the cities of Agra, Mathura, Panki, Bindki, Rooma, Kanpur, Etawah, Fatehpur, Akbarpur, Mathura, Allahabad, Mughal Sarai, Varanasi, Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh, Faridabad in Haryana, Dehri in Sone, Mohania, Aurangabad Sasaram, in Bihar, Dhanbad Barhi, in Jharkhand Durgapur, Kolkata, Barddhaman and Asansol in West Bengal. This is a well maintained highway which gives the pleasure of smooth drive throughout the way.

National Highway 6 or NH 6

National Highway 6 which is commonly referred to as NH 6 is one of the busy National Highway in India. This highway is running over 1,949 km from Hazira to Kolkata. This highway stretches between Pal Lahara and Barkote. It runs through West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha state in India.

The highway connects through the cities of Kolkata, Durg, Amravati, Dhule, Surat, Raipur, Nagpur, Sambalpur. However NH 6 is crossed by NH 200 at two locations, one at Deogarh and second at Raipur.

National Highway 117 or NH 117

This is the only National Highway in India that runs entirely within the state of West Bengal. The southern terminal is in the South 24 Parganas district is in the coastal town of Bakkhali and the north-western terminal is in the Howrah district at Kona, near the town of Nibra.

The approx length of this highway is 133 km. This national highway joins the cities of Kolkata, Howrah, Diamond Harbour, Bakkhali and Kulpi with NH 2 and NH 6.

These highways have considerably reduced the time of traveling and increased prospect for people to travel for trade, business or pleasure and also offer trade routes for goods.
