Society in Howrah

Popularly called as the twin city to Kolkata, Howrah today is an engineering and industrial hub which witnessed uncontrolled and rapid urbanization since the 1920s.

It is separated by Kolkata by the River Hoogly and is situated on its west bank. However four bridges now connect the cousins along with ferry services across the river. In the state of West Bengal, Howrah is the second largest city after Kolkata.

The development of the city and the subsequent industrial boom has resulted in slums in Howrah due to the lack of proper infrastructural growth. But nevertheless the city serves as a lifeline for industries and is better connected with newer roads like the Kona Expressway. Howrah also has the distinction now to house the temporary secretariat offices of the Chief Minister in the HRBC building.
